My Passion

I started making Youtube videos way back when I was only in middle school. And I wish I never stopped because I cared way less about what people thought of me back then. That was probably because I was still so young and carefree 🤷‍. Now I’m 25 and pretty much have to meditate away all of my self-consciousness every now and then. Even though life has gotten more real and I’ve become an adult with lots of sometimes-annoying-adult-responsibilities, one thing remained the same; my love for making films.

What Held Me Back

I was going to study Film in college, but I was hella poor (like came from a then-poverty-stricken area of the Philippines type of poor). And I didn’t think an Arts degree was going to help me grab a financially stable job after college. I know, I know. In retrospect I can see how determination, passion, connect’s through proper networking, and creative work leads to a vast number of great-paying film opportunities. But the 19 year old Maricris wasn’t as aware of real and motivational statements such as those as I am today.

And so, I chose to enter the tech industry instead. To make a long story short, I stopped going to college (after having been in there for 5 years; did a lot of switching majors 😅) and joined a coding community which later turned into a non-profit organization that I helped build called GarageScript (GS). I went from being a college student who was scared to use the terminal to a college-dropout who loved the entire process of building apps/websites (lol, hey at least I’ve got a much-needed skill right?).

On top of being one of the Board Members for GS, I was also fortunate enough to get professional full-stack engineering experience by helping build the first version of C0d3; a coding education platform GS students uses for their teaching/learning experience.

Aside from building things, I also had to run a Youtube channel called Vim Girl for c0d3. In it I made educational videos about the lessons GS offered, tutorials on how to integrate cool APIs I liked, and other how-to-videos on a my fave tech tools. After a year of coding for C0d3 and being prolific on Vim Girl, I was presented with an amazing opportunity to continue making content at another tech startup!

What’s Propelled Me To Try Again

Not going to delve into the new startup I worked for, but I just gotta say that it was amazing, and awesome and all. Now back to the main story: In short, getting multiple chances to work on film-related stuff in the tech industry was truly a privilege. Cause you know, I f*cking love to film. But in all honesty, whenever you work for someone else there will always be a few rules and constraints that squeezes some creative juices out of ya. I mean, the responsibility of getting work done for another person in and of itself is enough to make your passion feel like a complete chore.

And don’t get me wrong, I totally understand how every single passion can inevitably turn into a chore once the person starts doing it for a living. Though maybe that chore is a little funner since they’re doing exactly what they choose to do 🤔. But I digress.

For once, I want to make film just for me (and you know, if my work can make other people like you happy then I guess I’ll be making it for you too 😏). That’s why today I’ve decided to take some time (3 months to be exact) off from working to finally focus on my creative film making.

Vim Girl 2.0

So, what exactly does Vim Girl 2.0 entail? Well for one, Vim Girl will no longer be the brand I stand by. But for my techies out there, do not worry. A lot of the content I plan on releasing will still involve educational videos on tech. To give you a little idea of what’s to come, here’s a list of topics I for sure plan on touching on:

  • DevOps tools (specifically Docker & Kubernetes)
  • Popular languages (JS, Go, TypeScript, Elm)
  • All things Cloud-Native
  • Working at a Non-profit/Startups
  • Maintaining a mind-n-body balance in this modern day and age
  • Dogs
  • Documentaries of my journey through the tech life

Oh, and one more thing. I made a promise to myself to share my creative content with you all on the daily! So feel free to tag along if you’re just as excited as I am (follow me here, on Twitter, Youtube & Instagram!) See y’all tmrw 😴.
